Anti-Spam

We use a 2-layer approach to block (or significantly reduce) incoming SPAM e-mail. At the first layer, located at the entry point to our network, every incoming e-mail is analyzed to determine if the sending server is listed on one of three Real Time Black Hole lists. At the second layer, internally within our network, Sybari's Advanced Spam Defense software is used to identify and quarantine potential SPAM. Both of these technologies work in tandem with one another to substantially reduce the amount of SPAM our end users are subjected to.

Layer 1

We use three Real Time Black Hole lists (RBL's) to block spam before it is received. RBL's are publicly maintained lists of known SPAM mail servers and Open Relay Servers. We use relays.ordb.org, sbl.spamhaus.org and dnsbl.njabl.org, the most used and most accurate black hole lists on the internet. When an e-mail is received at our SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) gateway, it is checked against these 3 lists to make sure it is not being sent from a known SPAM or Open Relay Server. If the e-mail is being sent from one of these servers, it is not allowed to enter our network.

If an e-mail is sent from a server which is listed in an online RBL, that e-mail is not permitted into the system. The offending system must be removed from the RBL before it is a trusted server. All Mailboxes are protected by our RBLs.

Layer 2

In addition to Black Hole Lists, we also use Sybari's Advanced Spam Defense (ASD) to quarantine spam. Sybari has numerous probes on the Internet which look for mass mailings (which are almost always SPAM). Once identified, Sybari logs those mass mailings in a centralized database for lookup and identification by their customers. ASD works by querying Sybari's service centers every time an Email is received to see if it is SPAM. Since this method is not dependent on the content of an e-mail, it is far more accurate and language independent than traditional content filtering systems.  Not all Mailboxes are protected by ASD, to have your mailbox protected by ASD send me an Email.  Spam can either be placed in a folder in your account, accessable via OWA, or placed in your inbox with "SPAM:::" at the start of the subject line.  If it has an appended subject you can download it via POP3 and use a client rule to move it into a different folder.  If it stays in your mailbox it will be purged every 30 days.  You can add addresses that you want blocked or trusted by following this link.   -   Edit your Anti-Spam security settings    -
